Of Embassies and Origins - Justice League International Part 2 (Eaglemoss Collection v77)

Review: Since we are doing a series of reviews focusing on Booster Gold over his nearly 40-year history, we include this one as a collection of some of his earliest appearances, dating to late 1987. That places the original publish date of these tales while his original solo series was still going strong.  This book is a beautiful, glossy hard-cover with smooth and heavy-stock paper inside, although the sometimes-low print reproduction quality leads to blurred and hard to read word balloons on occasion. It is also a rare book here in North America, as Eaglemoss Collections targeted UK fans with this series. At this point in the history of the 1987-rebooted Justice League, they have gained official United Nations recognition and sanction. To ensure their reach truly is global, they rebrand as Justice League International (as does the title of the series!) and they open new headquarters buildings around the world: New York, Paris and Moscow are included here. It's you: Superior Spider-Man volume 6 Goblin Nation

Cover of Superior Spider-Man volume 6 Goblin Nation

Review:

Green Goblin has taken over New York City. After hacking the spider-bots as well as Mayor Jameson's Spider-Slayers, he and his army of other goblins have run wild and declared the five boroughs "Goblin Nation."

Spider Island, Parker Industries and any friends and family of Peter Parker all come under assault. Worse, with Carlie Cooper infected by the Goblin Serum, after she figured out about Otto as Spider-Man, now Green Goblin knows all Otto's secrets.

Even as the Superior Spider-Man's world crumbles around him, and he struggles with his failures, internally the last remnants of Peter Parker's mind struggles for the surface, buried deep inside Otto's formative childhood memories.

Artist Guiseppe Camuncoli's double-page spreads of these memories and internal battles are superb, powerful statements of these characters. The final nod to old-school Marvel comics as Peter emerges is brilliant. His Goblin battle scenes pale in comparison, especially with his propensity to throw in gratuitous spread-legged crotch shots of Goblin Carlie.

The climax comes when Peter Parker retakes control of the body, just in time to save Otto's girlfriend. His cheeky man-purse insult sparks Green Goblin's hilarious, understated "it's you." reaction. And the difference is stark, the creative, reactive bravery replacing the cocky, reflective arrogance.

Unfortunately the denouement is long, slow and talk-filled, not a lot of drama or visual interest and a let-down after a solid-plus collection.

Description:

The so-called Superior Spider-Man has failed. Under his watch, the Green Goblin took control of New York's underworld. This is all Otto Octavius' fault...and now it's his responsibility to take the Goblin down. Win or lose, this will be Otto's greatest battle. But when Spiderlings, goblins, super villains and giant robots clash in a violent assault on Spidey's home base, Spider-Island, will Otto be able to regain his footing and prevail? Whatever you do, don't miss the biggest event in the entire Superior Spider-Man Saga! The End starts here, as Spider-Man takes on...the Goblin Nation! If you want to see people standing around talking, read another comic. If you want to see heroes having a fist fight, go somewhere else. You are in the Goblin Nation - and this is all-out war!
